Matinée is a Derbyshire based scheme that initially focussed on providing dementia friendly film events in village halls and community venues across the county to provide opportunities to access cultural events for people living with dementia/memory loss and their friends, family and carers. Matinée is funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Arts Derbyshire, Derbyshire County Council and supported by the Alzheimer’s Society.
Matinée Outreach, is a new element to the scheme and a response to Covid-19 and its effects on the project and its participants. We have had to cancel all our film screenings and know that is depriving many people living with dementia and their carers of cultural and social interaction. Our response was to recruit artists to work creatively with people living with dementia and/or memory loss, and their carers, living in Derbyshire and isolated due to Covid-19. The project aims to develop people’s social connectedness – not only through developing a new relationship with an artist remotely, but knowing they are involved in a project that other people are also participating in. The project enables people living with dementia to explore, develop and grow through creativity.
Participants have said:
“I cannot thank you enough for what you are doing with my mum. It’s been very emotional seeing her pictures too. What you are doing is truly amazing!”
“Being part of this project, it’s been a blessing”
“There have been times where this has kept me going”
The project will continue running until March 2022. Artists work with participants for approximately 8 weeks and all activities are personalised to each individual.
