Please let us know if you would like help with transport.

People living with dementia and family members often feel isolated as they may find it difficult to cope in unfamiliar social groupings and settings.  This special programme is designed with an interval to create a small, comfortable, welcoming venue. There is ready access to toilets or a quiet area during the screening of the film and people are free to move around during the performance.

Family members or carers will be expected to accompany those with dementia. Volunteers from the Alzheimer’s Society and Darley Dale Film Society will act in a supportive role.

Elvis is in the building!

On Wed 13th May, Elvis Presley spent the afternoon wooing a Long Eaton audience at St John’s Church Hall. Over 50 people came to enjoy the film Blue Hawaii and sing along with Elvis!

We were also thrilled to be joined by the Belper Ukulele Group. Eight of them came to sing through some classic songs like You are my sunshine, When I’m cleaning windows, Hit the road Jack and Waltzing Matilda! They were great fun – and we enjoyed singing along with them!

Please come to the next Long Eaton film screening on Wed 18th September – Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Kicking off the 2019 season in Chesterfield

Genevieve at The Winding Wheel, Feb 2019

Over 70 people came to the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield on Wed 6th Feb to enjoy the vintage car chase classic – Genevieve. There was a lovely mix of regular attendees, and quite a few new people who hadn’t been before. Again, we had superb support from our Alzheimer’s Society volunteers: Helen, Colin, Ann and Heather.  We’re also tremendously grateful for the support from Wendy Blunt at Chesterfield Borough Council, and the Winding Wheel’s front of house, catering and technical staff too.

Our next Chesterfield screening is 8th May 2019. We’ll be showing The Band Wagon, featuring Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse and Oscar Levant.

Why we do what we do…

We sometimes get asked what makes us dementia friendly, and why that is important. Here’s a lovely piece of feedback that answers that:

“My dad did quite a bit of talking. He loves this film and was talking along with the actors and also excited to share his memories with me while it was on. What was great was that no one minded – no one tutted or frowned at his talking and joining in with the film. It meant that we could both relax and really enjoy ourselves.”

Here’s our 2019 programme – please pass on to anyone living with dementia, their family, friends and carers. Thanks!

Christmas has arrived!

Matinée dived into the festive celebrations with over 200 people attending our dementia friendly film screening of White Christmas as the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield on 21st November. People living with dementia, their friends, family and carers started arriving from 12.30pm, complete with festive jumpers and Santa hats! A couple of care home groups made a full afternoon of it by bringing a packed lunch, and enjoying a soundtrack of 1950s carols before the main film started.
A great team of volunteers from the Alzheimer’s Society, and staff from Chesterfield Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council Public Health team all helped to serve teas and coffees to everyone. There were mincepies too, kindly donated by Morrisons. In the interval we had a great sing a long of favourite Christmas songs including Frosty the Snowman, Jingle Bells and lots of carols! There were also a couple of quizzes based on the film and the carols with prizes handed out at the end.
And there’s still a chance to join in the Christmas fun with Matinée with following screenings taking place:

The (new) year ahead…

The Christmas season is almost upon us and we have lots of Christmas themed films coming up. The 2019 dates for many more film screenings have also just been announced. Have a look at our Events page, and also our Facebook page.

There will be a leaflet with all the dates of all the Derbyshire venues coming out soon. If you would like a copy, please get in touch with Frances Watt, the Matinée project coordinator on [email protected].

Shall we dance? at QUAD, Derby

The King and I imageVisitors seemed to really enjoy the latest dementia friendly film screening of The King and I at QUAD, Derby on 13th February. Unprompted singing could be heard  throughout  Getting to know you,  Whistle a happy tune … Lots of feet were audibly tapping along to ‘Shall we dance ?‘ and when Deborah Kerr and Yul Brynner paused in their duet, the singing carried on in the audience! Lots of smiles and ‘thank you’s at the end, and recollections of when people had seen the film before – along with a definite consensus that Yul Brynner is a very handsome man…    One new visitor with her granddaughter told us the last time she went to the cinema was to see Shirley Valentine in 1989!

120+ Singin’ in the Winding Wheel!

We held our first ever screening at The Winding Wheel in Chesterfield on 7th February with Singin’ in the Rain. Over 120 carers and people living with dementia came to enjoy the afternoon, with film, refreshments and chats.

Audience watching the film at the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield

A huge thanks to the wonderful Chesterfield Borough Council staff who helped on the day, and all our volunteers from the Alzheimer’s Society, and staff from Making Space.

The next Chesterfield screening is with Cliff Richard, taking us on a Summer Holiday on Wed 16th May 2018.
